14 October 2024 – Usually, one needs a vehicle for a few days to do a comprehensive road report. Unfortunately, I was only able to spend a few hours in the 3XO as it was integrated into the Mahindra 20 Years in South Africa launch held at Sun City.
First impressions are the most lasting. I liked it; it’s good to look at, though not so unusual that one asks too many questions about what the designers were thinking. LED headlamps with daytime running lights with 17” diamond cut alloy wheels, LED tail lamps and infinity light bar across the rear makes a lasting impression.
The interior is cozy and quite impressive. With dual floating hi-res screens; a 10.25” digital cluster and 10.25” infotainment system, you get a feeling of being in comfortable control. The panoramic sunroof is the largest in its class.
Some great features include the Harmon Kardon audio system with 7 speakers and nine-channel equaliser. I cranked the music and was impressed at the sound quality. Wireless charging is a great feature and connectivity with Apple and Android systems was effortless.
It also has a 65W USB charger port, powerful enough to charge a laptop.
Performance-wise, the 3XO is kitted with a 1.2L turbo petrol engine pumping out 82 kW power with 200 Nm torque. The manufacturers claim 0-60 km/hr acceleration in under 5 seconds. I tested this and can confirm their claim.
It boasts a 3rd gen Aisin 6-speed auto transmission. I was hugely impressed with the gearchange. I tried my best to sense the gear changes but couldn’t.
It has three driving modes, but I was unable to test these.
Safety features include 6 airbags, ESP, all-wheel disk braking, three-point seatbelts front and rear and advanced driver assist with 10 safety features. Also, it has a safety cocoon with 45% of body in ultra-high strength steel.
With pricing between R254 999 for MT and R274 000 for AT models it is excellent value for money.
All in all, a fantastic little compact SUV from Mahindra.
My only gripe is the indicator sound; instead of the good old “tick-tock”, it emits a two-tone musical sound that I didn’t enjoy. I suppose I could get used to it…
