MIDRAND, FRIDAY AUGUST 2, 2024 – An enthusiastic contingent from the Alfa Romeo Owners Association of South Africa (AROASA) have been on a “pilgrimage” to some of the most iconic Alfa Romeo sights and events in Italy.
The Alfa Romeo brand celebrates a number of key anniversaries from its storied history this year, not least the 70th anniversary of the launch of the Giulietta. True to Alfa Romeo form, the first Giulietta was in fact a sportscar, the Giulietta Sprint – styled by Bertone – making its debut at the Turin Motor Show in 1954. And the nameplate lives on in the current line-up.
Core to the tour was the 2024 Real Alfa event at the Alfa Romeo Museum in Arese, Italy. The invitation originated from a passionate following by AROASA that started with a tour in 2004 for the Giulietta 50th and again in 2010 for the Centenary.
Making most of the new opportunity, the team planned an intensive itinerary of motoring excursions along the way, including a visit to Pininfarina – stylists of many great Alfa Romeo models, including the Giulietta Spider – and Italdesign, founded by Giorgetto Giugiaro who had also penned many models such as the Alfasud and, more recently, the Alfa Romeo Brera.
The historic immersion continued, being hosted at the Stellantis Heritage Hub where the team experienced the vast collection of classics in the collection, as well as some of the products and services offered by the heritage team. The professional facility is worthy of a visit for any fan of any of the Stellantis brands.
Some of the most iconic Alfa Romeo models were tested and developed on the Balocco Proving Grounds. Founded in 1962 and constantly evolved and expanded over the years, the test tracks are now a benchmark on the international scene. Somehow, being prohibited to take pictures at the facility just added to the emotional allure of this place for Alfisti.
The Alfa Romeo Museum is truly world-class, filled with history and some of the greatest productions cars, aircraft engines, prototypes, and racing cars from Alfa Romeo’s storied legacy. Whilst many hours can be spent on the museum floors, the South African contingent were especially treated to a tour of the “storage lockers” – those cars not usually on display in the museum, but a mind-blowing scale of special vehicles to make any Alfisti’s mouth water. South Africa does enjoy special recognition in the museum, all the country’s Alfa Romeo clubs and the national body’s badges displayed on the club wall.
Shaded by trees “planted” by Alfa Romeo clubs from all over the world, the museum car park played venue for the start of the Giulietta 70th celebrations. An intriguing presentation on the Giulietta nameplate was backed up by some of the most spectacular classic Alfa Romeos competing for Real Alfa – literally translated as “royal” or “regal”, the best Alfa Romeo on show was crowned the Real Alfa.
The South Africans played a visible part in the celebrations on the museum’s track, the club banner draped over the Alfa Romeo Stelvio used on the tour and AROASA even featuring in a short interview on stage. As South Africa should: at one stage SA was the largest market for Alfa Romeo outside of Italy.
Alfa Romeo’s Stelvio is one of their most-awarded models ever, its pioneering technical specification truly endowing it with more dynamics and sportiness than any SUV should deserve. It is an Alfa Romeo, after all, and it is packed with the latest technologies, embodying Italian passion and performance excellence.
Stelvio really is a visceral experience, a fitting choice for the South African enthusiasts sharing an unmatched passion for the Alfa Romeo brand.
