Cars in the Park is an event that I will always move heaven and earth to attend. It’s one of those happenings that brings me so much joy and awe. My personal passion is for the lovingly restored and preserved vintages that are on display. It is a magical window into history as well as my childhood.
The main theme this year was focused on cars built before World War II, and I was not disappointed. The display of makes and models, from Buicks, Cadillacs, Chevrolets, RollsRoyces, MGs, Fords, to mention only a few, was jaw-dropping.
The pits area was, for me, the main feature of these beautiful, old classics.
With over 2 500 displays around the Zwartkops Raceway track, I couldn’t help feeling that the day wasn’t quite long enough to take in the variety and sheer number of cars. It was an absolute orgy of virtually every car I could recognise as well as those I couldn’t.
I always have fond memories of my younger days when cars like Anglias, Ford Cortinas, VW Beetles, DKWs, Volvos Alfas, Minis etcetera were the staple modes of transport. Every “windgat” in my home town of Krugersorp would love to display their pride and joy outside the movies on a Saturday afternoon.
These memories were gloriously revived at Cars in the Park on Sunday, and I thank the Pretoria Old Motor Club for this annual event.
Of course, it wasn’t only about memories. There were hundreds of modern cars on display around the track, all in various forms of tuning-up and modification.
The common denominator was passion for cars. What a pleasure!
